The Stressed Person

My previous blogs have defined the four different types of person I ask a Life Coach client to choose from to describe their current life.  The first two were The No-Clue Person and The Guilty Person.  This week we’ll talk about The Stressed Person.

Dr. Katie Brazelton, founder of Life Purpose Coaching Centers International, describes the Stressed Person as saying, “I am already doing what I was called to do; however, (and it’s a big however) the rest of my world is somewhat out of balance or alignment. Actually, I have little time to breathe, and this is no way to live.” This person has clarity of vision about life purpose – but also has a gaping hole about personal and/or family matters that negates gratitude and blocks soaring. Stress, dissatisfaction, and floundering relationships gnaw at this person.

This person described me as I was coached for my Life Coach certification. I had an “idea” of what God wanted me to do as a purpose, but I was flat-out ignoring that inner tug on my heart to follow. I thought it meant leaving the high-paying, but enormously stressful career, and I chose not to think about that for years.

But God has a way of getting our attention when you’re refusing to listen, doesn’t he? Wouldn’t it be nice if he could simply say “Listen up honey! I need you to leave that job and be a Life Coach in Oklahoma. I’ll take care of everything. You don’t need to worry about money, benefits, retirement, moving, finding a new job for both you and Super Dad.  Now get movin’!

If you ignore God and do it your way, crazy things start happening. Your already stressful job of 10 to 16 hours a day stacks more responsibility on you until you can’t breathe. The anger builds in your system and comes out at co-workers and family. The constant turning of your mind to remember everything starts building tension in your jaw and other areas of health. You don’t care about exercise and gain 25 pounds. You start to realize how the smallest computer outage or car repair places more hours, calls and struggles into your already impossible schedule. You sit in church knowing you’re not helping others the way you should and ask God why…but hear no answer. Not being heard brings back abandoned and neglected feelings from long ago. The tears won’t stop. Depression kicks in. Medication is needed. You have to ask for help.

That’s when you sink to your knees at your lowest low and beg God for help! Then, you’re ready to hear the inner conversation that was trying to speak all along. Only then are you prepared to find the answers to relieve the pain.

“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” Ecclesiastes 4:12

When you reach out for help, you’re opening up many possibilities. The trio – you, someone to help, and God – makes you stronger, better and not easily broken. Whether that’s your pastor, friend, partner, Life Coach or Therapist, the three of you can break barriers and heal your heart to be open for God’s purpose.
