Most of us have an obsession or two. I’ll admit mine are a bit unusual, but we’re not here to judge now are we? Okay, so I find more enjoyment than most in… beauty products. Many years ago, when my sister, Penny, introduced me to Sephora in Seattle, I thought I had found the door to heaven. Not only was the entire store dedicated to beauty products, I could try anything I like…and I could even take samples home. I’m a little short of breath even now, remembering that day.
Make-up and beauty enhancement is an ancient practice dating back to perhaps even Eve, who thought a little essence of apple could make life a little spicier, – but that’s a lesson for another day. Cleopatra nailed it, setting eyeliner trends that even the men are picking up on these days. It’s the age old pursuit of being just a bit more attractive, that draws us. We make our best effort to cover our flaws, and well who doesn’t like to feel just a little prettier? I will share that I have a secret envy for people who honestly are not concerned with their appearance (life would be simpler), but I honestly AM concerned (that sounds so unspiritual – but hey, we’re being honest), and so here we are.
Fashionista Grace emailed me not long ago to share that she had become a Sephora VIB, proudly announcing that her “beauty obsession had finally paid off.” She had evidently spent the magical amount of money that promotes you from an average “Beauty Insider” consumer to a VERY IMPORTANT BEAUTY. The title came along with discounts, free shipping and a total makeover. I laughed at her. I teased her. I may have even tried to shame her a little, but she laughed too, and it was all good. It felt great to know I had been surpassed in the arena of beauty addiction.
A few weeks later, Hero Husband and I were doing our Christmas shopping, and I went into Sephora to make some stocking stuffer purchases (okay, and get a little something, something for moi). I proudly handed over my “Beauty Insider” card to get a few extra samples, and that’s when the cashier announced rather loudly …CONGRATULATIONS, YOU JUST HIT VIB STATUS! Frankly, I was a little embarrassed. I looked at the other customers who were looking at me. I saw looks of approval, envy, and I’m pretty sure one lady was sneering in disgust. Oh how I missed Fashionista daughter at that moment – looks like we’re on even ground again.
So, TODAY, I can, with confidence in my VIB credentials, tell you that I have discovered the most outstanding method of bringing the “perfect glow” to your complexion. You may be too “oily” and have been searching for the ideal matte powder that keeps you looking natural. Or, you may be dry, and a little wrinkled, desperate for the right amount of hydration to restore that supple, youthful softness. Pay attention, I have something “outside of ordinary” for you to consider:
My friend, Katie, sent her usual encouragement text just this morning, and quoted Psalm 34:5:
“Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed”.
Then she reminded me of when Moses came down from the mountain, his face shone from being in the presence of God (check out Exodus 34:29).
And my favorite one:
“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit”. II Cor 3:18
Katie had no idea I was planning on sharing my VIB story today, and I had no idea it was going to end this way. That’s just how clever God is.
…And, since I’m being honest – I truly hope and pray the Spirit of the Lord shines through you and me (and all our beauty products) every day.
…And, the best news is: we don’t have to spend way to much money at Sephora, we’ve already achieved VIB status with God – no purchase necessary.
…Oh, oh, and the perks? He’s paid the entire price for our salvation (John 3:16), He promises an abundant life (John 10:10) ..and His makeover is EXTRAORDINARY!!!
“Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgotten, and everything is new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17
